Aechmea (Eck-me-uh) is a large genus with over 250 species known for their brilliant bracts that come out of the center cup in a form of a spike. All have broad rosettes and arching bow-shaped leaves. Some of these tank-forming plants have sharp teeth on the margins. The inflorescence can be loosely branched or round in cross section. Many species also have vibrant blue or red berry-like fruit that can last from several weeks to 3 months. The majority of these plants are medium and large in size, great for a landscape environment in warm climates. Aechmeas are fairly easy to grow. Some of the popular Aechmeas are 'Blanchetiana', 'Chantinii' and 'Fasciata' species.
